You've just found the perfect shade of carpet. It matches your furniture and will look great in the design scheme of your living room. There's just one problem, the price tag. If only you could find the same shade at a different flooring store for less, however, the salesperson assures you that only their store sells this exact shade of carpet. Pay up, or go home empty-handed. Those are your only options.

Oh really? I don't think so.

Hi, I'm Tony Oliva, owner of Unique Flooring in Oceanside, California. In this short video, I'm going to expose one of the most pervasive and unfair sales tactics that other flooring companies use to try and pressure you into buying from them.

I call it the "Only Here" strategy. If you happen to fall in love with a particular shade of carpet, the salesperson may try to force your hand by telling you that this shade is only available in their store. They'll have a slick speech all prepared, something that may sound like this:

"This carpet contains a ratio of 13% taupe to 26% café cream. You simply won't find this color ratio anywhere else..."

The key to this argument is that it contains a kernel of truth. That flooring retailor may indeed be the only one that sells that exact shade of carpet. What the salesperson doesn't tell you, however, is that all that percentage mumbo jumbo isn't noticeable to the naked eye. The majority of consumers won't be able to see any difference between carpet with 13% taupe and carpet with 15% taupe, especially if they aren't looking at the different samples side by side.

If you go to a different flooring store, it's highly likely that you'll be able to find a very similar version of the carpet shade you liked. Sure, it may not be an exact match, but if you find a great deal, the price difference could more than make up for it.

Don't be fooled by the "Only Here" marketing ploy. The salesperson is trying to pressure you into buying now at their establishment. Always take your time before making a big flooring purchase decision. If you're not 100% sure, then keep looking. Remember, you can always snap a quick pic of a carpet sample you like with your cellphone and then bring it to other local flooring retailors to see if they have something similar at a lower price.

If someone tries to use the "Only Here" trick on you, it demonstrates that they're more interested in profits then helping you find the best carpet for your home.
